Department History: The Department of Theoretical Aspects of English Language at Uzbekistan State University of World Languages (UzSWLU) began its activities in 2017 as a part of the Faculty of English Language. From 2017 to 2020, the department was led by Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor M. Saidova. Between 2020-2023, the department was headed by M. Itolmasov. Since September 2023, the head of the department is Abduvahabova Mahina Azatovna.

In the current 2024-2025 academic year, a total of 27 professors and teachers are working, 3 of whom hold academic degrees. There are also 3 internal adjuncts, 1 external adjunct, 5 senior teachers, 12 teachers, and 7 trainee teachers.

About the Head of the Department: Abduvahabova Mahina Azatovna, Doctor of Philosophy in Philology (PhD), Associate Professor, began her career at this institution in 2009. She was appointed head of the Department of Theoretical Aspects of English Language №2 in September 2023.

Main Goal of the Department: In line with the Law on Education and the National Program for Personnel Training, as well as the "Concept for the Development of the Higher Education System of Uzbekistan until 2030," the department aims to prepare highly qualified specialists who meet global standards and address the demands of modern times.

Key Tasks of the Department:

  • Conduct theoretical courses such as Lexicology, Cognitive Semantics, Theoretical Grammar and Linguistic History, Psycholinguistics, Literature and Creativity, Corpus Linguistics, and practical courses such as Critical Thinking in Reading and Writing, and others, based on innovative methodologies.

  • Ensure the delivery of lectures, practical sessions, and other academic activities at a high theoretical, scientific, methodological, and professional level, in accordance with national educational standards.

  • Supervise students' graduation theses and master’s dissertations, and guide independent work.

  • Evaluate students' knowledge based on a fair and transparent ranking system.

  • Create conditions for students to link theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

  • Develop and approve syllabi for courses offered by the department.

  • Prepare and publish textbooks, educational, methodological, and visual aids.

  • Participate in the preparation of necessary educational and methodological materials for private educational institutions.

  • Collaborate with talented students, guide them in participating in academic olympiads, and assist in their research activities.

  • Support scientific research among department professors and faculty.

  • Facilitate integration between education, science, and industry.

Research Focus: The department conducts research in the following priority areas:

  • Theoretical issues of modern linguistic research.

  • Teaching modern linguistic fields using innovative methods.

  • Cross-cultural communication in teaching foreign languages.

  • Enhancing students' academic, scientific, and critical thinking skills.

Academic Programs: Undergraduate program: 60111800 – Foreign Language and Literature (English language and literature).

Courses offered include: Foreign Language Teaching Methodology, Academic English, Cross-cultural Communication in Foreign Language Teaching, Critical Thinking in Reading and Writing, Corpus Linguistics, Cognitive Semantics, Lexicology, Literature and Creativity, Psycholinguistics, and others.

Research Activities: The department's faculty members are currently preparing their research for discussion and final approval (including dissertations by Abduvahabova Mahina, Nodira Fayziyeva, Mahzuna Polvonova, Dilorom Khayrullayeva, Shokhsanam Khusanova, Madina Shakirova, PhDs). All of the department's 23 core faculty members are part of an independent research school.

Achievements of the Department:

  • Between 2020 and 2023, several department members participated in professional development programs in the UK, Finland, Sweden, and other countries.

  • Faculty members have received international certificates (C1 level).

  • The department has also published textbooks, educational, and methodological guides.

  • The department organizes an annual scientific conference on current issues in modern linguistic research and will host an international conference in May 2025 on "Modern Cognitive Research: Debate and Discussion."

Collaborations: The department has signed cooperation agreements with universities from India, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Poland, Malaysia, and others, and is actively participating in ERASMUS+ programs.
