The Department of World Literature

The History of the Department: at the Uzbekistan State World Languages University has been one of the long-standing departments actively functioning within the university. The department began its operations in 2019 as the Department of World Literature. Based on the decree No. 553 of October 10, 2019, approved in coordination with the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and in accordance with the minutes of the university’s Academic Council meeting on August 29, 2019, the new structure of the university was confirmed, and the Department of World Literature was established. The department has been operating ever since. Since 2019, Professor Gulnoz Iskandarovna Khalliyeva, Doctor of Philology, has been serving as the head of the department. The Department of World Literature currently has 20 faculty members.

International Collaborations: 

In accordance with the Decree No. 376 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan on improving the system of translation and publication of the finest samples of world literature into the Uzbek language and the masterpieces of Uzbek literature into foreign languages, the Department of World Literature has been actively involved in strengthening cooperation between the representatives of world and Uzbek literature and promoting cultural relations between nations.

Department Achievements: 

Professor Gulnoz Khalliyeva has participated in international conferences in prestigious universities across the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Turkey, Russia, Germany, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan from 2019-2025, presenting her research papers. She has also established academic collaborations with renowned comparative literary studies centers and departments, such as Zentrum für Literatur-und Kulturforschung (ZfL) kabi qiyosiy adabiyotshunoslik markazlari (Germaniya, Berlin), University of Toronto Centre for Comparative Literature (Kanada, Toronto). Yale University  Department of  Comparative Literature (AQSh, Yel universiteti), Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi Karşılaştırmalı Edebiyat Bölümü (Turkiya, Osmangozi universiteti)  Harvard University Department of Comparative Literature (AQSH), Indiana University Comparative Literature Department, Columbia University Department of English and Comparative Literature(AQSh), University of Washington Department of Comparative Literature (Vashington) and others. 

As a member of the innovative project "Creation of a Database of Turkic Manuscripts Stored in European Funds, Which Are Not Available in Uzbekistan" and the electronic platform "Evroturcologica. uz," Professor Khalliyeva has conducted scientific research across 13 European countries from 2021-2023 and has applied advanced ideas to the department’s activities. In 2024, she led the project "Creation of the Comparative Literary Studies Electronic Platform" and achieved international cooperation with various prestigious universities in Turkey. 

Under the department's initiative, Uzbekistan’s first scientific journal for comparative research, titled "Comparativistika," was launched, with the first issue published online in April 2024. In March 2025, the "Comparativistika" journal was included in the list of scientific journals of the Higher Attestation Commission (OAK). 

In 2024, the department’s professors collaboratively published the "World Literature" textbook. Additionally, in 2024, Professor G. Khalliyeva and co-authors published textbooks on "Navoi Studies" and "Comparative Literary Studies."
