History of the Department:

In order to train qualified personnel in the field of history and theory of linguistics in Uzbekistan, since 1970, the Department of "General Linguistics" was established as an interfaculty department within the Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages, with the aim of solving issues and problems of world linguistics on a scientific scale .

The first head of the department was Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor AS Sodiqov . He headed the department from 1970 to 1991.

From 1992 to 1995, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan AR Rustamov worked as the head of the department.

In 1996-1997, Doctor of Philology, Professor AV Redkin was appointed head of the department.

From 1997 to 2011 , the department was again headed by Associate Professor AS Sodiqov .

In 2009, Associate Professor AS Sodiqov organized a "Linguistic Seminar" for philological higher educational institutions of the Republic under the Department of "General Linguistics". A separate library was established at the university for this activity, specifically in the linguistic direction.

From 2011 to the present, the department has been headed by Doctor of Philology, Professor RU Madjidova .

The main goal of the department

- Study and implement modern trends in linguistics and innovations in language theories.

The main tasks of the department are:

• Conducting lectures and seminars in linguistics at a high methodological and professional level, as specified in the curricula drawn up in accordance with the state educational standards of higher education;
• supervising students' graduation theses, master's theses, and independent research projects written in language theory, general linguistics, and all new linguistic areas;

1. The project "Creation of textbooks and study guides in English for theoretical subjects in the master's degree program in foreign philology from the perspective of an intercultural and communicative approach" for 2015-2017.

of the department , Doctor of Philology, Professor RU Madjidova, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor X.S. Mukhitdinova, participated in the republican competition of scientific and creative works "Mother tongue - the pride of the nation" held by the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan among professors and teachers of higher educational institutions with the practical project "Creating multimedia products for intensive teaching of the Uzbek language for speakers of foreign languages" and took 1st place in the category "Best software products and developments".

1. In October 2021, the head of the department, ffd, professor RU Madzhidova, ffd, professor QO Saparova, pfd, professor XS Muhitdinova visited the Russian-Tajik (Slavic) University of the Republic of Tajikistan. They participated in the international scientific and practical conference on the topic "The role of the Russian-Tajik (Slavic) University in the development of innovative education and dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Republic of Tajikistan" with their reports.
2. In November 2021 , FFD, Professor RU Madzhidova returned from a business trip to Minsk, the Republic of Belarus, to establish cooperation between Uzbekistan and Belarus in the field of scientific and innovative processes. 
3. In November 2021 , ffd, professor RU Madzhidova returned from a business trip to Moscow, Russia, where she visited MGU and MGLU universities in Moscow, to develop international cooperation for the development of science.
4. From January 23 to February 8, 2024, the department's professors and teachers, ffd, professor RU Madjidova, pfd, professor HS Muhitdinova, visited Columbia and Indiana universities to exchange experiences in teaching Uzbek and English, organizing summer schools for American students, as part of the pilot project "Creating multimedia products for intensive teaching of the Uzbek language for speakers of foreign languages". During the visit, views were expressed on the issues of studying the Uzbek language at Indiana University, as well as establishing dialogue and charitable activities .

On January 23, 2024, a delegation from the Uzbek State University of World Languages, led by Rano Urishevna Madjidova, Head of the Department of General Linguistics of the Uzbek State University of World Languages, Professor, Head of the Practical Project "Multimedia Products for Intensive Teaching of the Uzbek Language for Speakers of Foreign Languages", visited the Uzbek-American Compatriots' Societies in New York, USA.     

At the invitation of Abdumalik Ahmedov, head of the Uzbek-American Society of Compatriots, they participated in the opening ceremony of the Ziyo Art School, which will open in New York on February 3, 2024.

R.Madjidova, the head of the practical project "Multimedia products for intensive teaching of the Uzbek language for speakers of foreign languages", participated in a seminar held by the CeLCAR Center at Indiana University with her lecture and presentation.

On April 29, 2025, an international scientific and practical conference was organized on the topic "Global Linguistics: New Approaches and Research". Representatives of foreign higher education institutions actively participated in the conference. As a result of introducing innovative, student-centered approaches to the language teaching process, highly qualified, creative personnel are trained. Such approaches increase the quality of the education system and ensure its competitiveness in the labor market.

The international scientific and practical conference on the topic "Global Linguistics: New Approaches and Research", organized by the Department of General Linguistics, Faculty of English, 1st Faculty of the Uzbek State University of World Languages, Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovations of the Republic of Uzbekistan, was an important step towards creating an open, innovative and dialogical scientific space in the field of linguistics.
