History of the department:

The Department of General Linguistics was established in 1970. Many prominent scientists and experienced specialists worked in this department. The Department of General Linguistics is one of the most prestigious departments of the university with a rich history.

In order to train mature personnel in the field of history and theory of linguistics in Uzbekistan, since 1970, the "General Linguistics" department was established as an interfaculty department within the framework of the Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages.

The first head of the department is candidate of philological sciences, associate professor A.S. Sadikov. He headed the department from 1970 to 1991.

From 1992 to 1995, Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan A.R. Rustamov worked as the head of the department.

In 1996-1997, doctor of philological sciences, professor A.V. Redkin was appointed head of the department.

From 1997 to 2011, the department was again headed by associate professor A.S. Sadikov led.

In 2009, associate professor A.S. Sadikov organized a "Linguistic Seminar" for the philological higher education institutions of the Republic under the "General Linguistics" department. A special linguistic library was established for this activity at the university.

From 2011 to the present, the department was headed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor R.U. Madjidova is leading.

The main purpose of the department

- Training of qualified personnel in the field of history and theory of linguistics in Uzbekistan.

The main tasks of the department are:

• to conduct lectures and seminars at a high methodological and professional level, as specified in the curricula prepared in accordance with the state educational standards of higher education;
• guiding students' graduate qualification works, master's theses and independent researchers;
• fair assessment of students' knowledge based on the credit-module system;
• development of educational programs for the department's subjects and submitting them for approval in accordance with the established procedure.
• preparation of textbooks, training manuals and discussion of other textbooks, training manuals and teaching-methodical literature to be published;
• creating conditions for professors-teachers of the department to carry out research work;
• discussion of completed scientific research works and recommendations for the next stages;
• ensuring the integration of education, science and production;
• reviewing and approving personal plans of professors and teachers of the department for educational, teaching-methodical, scientific-research, spiritual-educational and organizational work;
• to study, generalize and disseminate the work experiences of experienced professors and teachers, to master new pedagogical and information technologies and to apply them to the teaching process.

Achievements of the department:

Scientific projects of the department:

1. 2015-2017 project "Creation of textbooks and training manuals in English from the theoretical subjects of the master's degree in foreign philology from the perspective of intercultural and communicative approach".

2. 2020-2022 practical project "Creating intensive Uzbek language teaching multimedia products for foreign language speakers".

Professors of the department include DSc, professor R.U. Madjidova, DSc, professor X.S. Muhitdinova are professors of higher education institutions by the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the practical project "Creation of multimedia products for intensive teaching of Uzbek language for speakers of foreign languages" at the national level and they participated in the "Mother language – the pride of the nation" national competition of scientific and creative works held by professors-teachers of higher educational institutions and won the 1st place in the category "Best software products and developments" took over.

In October 2021, the head of the department, DSc, professor R.U. Madjidova, DSc, professor Q.O. Saparova, DSc, professor X.S. Muhitdinova visited the Russian-Tajik (Slavic) University of the Republic of Tajikistan. They participated in the international scientific and practical conference on the topic "The role of the Russian-Tajik (Slavic) University in the development of innovative education and the 30th anniversary of the Republic of Tajikistan" with his lectures.

In November 2021, among the professors and teachers of the department, DSc, professor R.U. Madjidova, DSc, professor Q.O. Saparova, DSc, professor X.S. Muhitdinova returned from a business trip to Minsk, Republic of Belarus, in connection with the republic-wide practical project "Creation of intensive Uzbek language teaching multimedia products for speakers of foreign languages".

In January 2022, among the professors and teachers of the department,  DSc, professor R.U. Madjidova,  DSc, professor X.S. Mukhitdinova returned from a business trip to Moscow in connection with the practical project "Creation of intensive Uzbek language teaching multimedia products for speakers of foreign languages" at the national level.

In March 2023, the head of the department, DSc, professor R.U. Madjidova took advanced training courses at the center for retraining and upgrading pedagogic personnel at TDOTAU named after A. Navoi.

In April-May 2023, the teachers of the department F.K. Yuldashev and S.F. Yuldasheva took advanced training courses at the network (regional) center for the retraining and professional development of pedagogues under the National University of Uzbekistan.

In June 2023, the teachers of the department Sh.A. Alimardanova and A.R. Galyamova took advanced training courses at the network (regional) center for retraining and professional development of pedagogues under the National University of Uzbekistan.
